the oberlin QUEER wellness coalition

The Oberlin Queer Wellness Coalition, or OQWC, aims to increase communication and awareness at Oberlin College about the full scope of wellness issues facing LGBTQQIA people.  We will promote events including, but not limited to, presentation of resources and information, sponsorship of events and exhibitions, and creation of safe spaces for open discussion in order to enrich the health and vitality of the queer community of Oberlin College.

Anonymous asked: I'm a queer student that's going to be attending Oberlin next year. I know that Oberlin has a lot of lgbtq students, but what does that mean, percentage wise? Would you say there are more queer men than women or vice versa? What is queer dating like at Oberlin? What about conservatory vs. college? Sorry I have so many questions. I'm from the deep south and Oberlin is pretty much the opposite of where I live. Thank you!

hi!

i’m mandy, and i’m from the deep south, too! i get where you’re coming from, and oberlin can seem super different. oberlin is pretty cool, but it’s still filled with people.

there are a lot of lgbt/q identified students. i’m not sure of an exact estimate, but i know female bodied/identified lbq students way outnumber male bodied/identified students.

queer dating at oberlin is what you make it. some people date. some people are serially monogamous. so people hook-up. my advice: don’t get discouraged as a first year. you WILL find someone. i promise. :)

conservatory v. college. okay. i was double degree my first two years, so i think i can speak to this. the con is more conservative that the college, however, conservatory relationships are different. connies are close because they practice/perform/study, etc., together all the time. at least for me, connies loved me for me, and they didn’t care that i was gay.

that being said, oberlin’s a pretty liberal place, and i have yet to experience blatant homophobia from students. (the town is a different story.)

how about you email me at ahogan@oberlin.edu, and we can talk even more? i really look forward to hearing from you!
